ROBERTSON-EAGLES MEMORIAL HMI GOLF CLASSIC
This year’s annual HMI Atlantic golf fundraiser was held Saturday, September 9, 2017 at the Petitcodiac Golf & Country Club in Petitcodiac, NB. The fourteen teams of golfers hit the links bright and early to enjoy the best ball format, turning an individual sport into a team game.
Following the dinner our MC, Dr. Bill Shaw, who has served for many years on the international board for HMI, introduced some of our special guests including former NHLer Mike Eagles and Trevor Georgie, President and General Manager of the Saint John Sea Dogs. We were also so pleased to have Gerry Eagles with us again, the widow of Ernie Eagles, one of the two men the tournament has been named after in their honor.
DINNER & AUCTION
This year’s annual HMI Atlantic Dinner & Auction Fundraiser, was held Friday, February 4, 2017. The well over 200 crowd enjoyed another wonderful evening together. The event once again was a tremendous success, raising almost $24,000!
The night was made extra special with our featured guests, former Montreal Canadien and Stanley Cup champion, Ryan Walter, along with his wife, Jennifer. Ryan brought along his Stanley Cup ring that he so kindly distributed throughout the crowd. As usual the evening featured a variety of auction items: trips, sports tickets, hockey collectibles, kitchenware, gardening accessories, automotive, gift cards and more. Back by popular demand was the IKEA corner, featuring items from the famous Swedish retailer and “Scalpers Corner”, where sports tickets and collectibles were available for bidding.
We are so grateful for the many kind and generous people who contributed towards the record breaking night. Each one played a significant role in the tremendously successful night. And special thanks for all who prayed. The weather made for ease of travel to and from the event. The night results exceeded our expectations. All glory to God!
The event has now reached a point of near capacity. Please stay tuned for next years date and reserve your tickets early. For date and ticket information call, (506) 849-4488 or email, firstname.lastname@example.org.
HMI Atlantic for many years offered an annual weekend hockey clinic in Sussex NB to launch the community’s minor hockey program. Over 140 boys and girls registered each year to participate in the event.
This past summer HMI Atlantic conducted it’s first weekend clinic in Halifax NS from August 26-27, 2017. Former camper and HMI Atlantic intern, Ryan Francis was a key organizer in planning the weekend hockey clinic. In conjunction with his home church, Hillside Wesleyan, the team assembled to offer a wonderful weekend of hockey instruction to close to 90 young hockey players and their families. The on-ice instructional staff was an amazing collection of hockey experience including three former Stanley
Cup champions, Chico Resch, Bobby Smith and Joe Dipenta. The young players were treated to three ice sessions plus a special goalie session led by Chico Resch. Hockey New Testaments were handed out to each child. Sunday morning the families were invited to a chapel held at the arena. 250 moms, dads and kids gathered to hear from our featured instructors and their journey of faith.
Plans are already underway for a repeat event planned for August of 2018.
For more information please email: email@example.com or call (506) 849-4488.
Other past clinic instructors have included, former NHLers Laurie Boschman, Ron Ellis, Dave Burrows, Jean Pronovost, Mark Osborne, Alex Pirus, Bob Bassen, Dave Cressman and Bill Butters.
FAITH & FAMILY NIGHT
In conjunction with local teams HMI Atlantic has hosted Faith and Family Nights. A discounted group ticket is provided to churches, youth groups and teams to attend a game. Following the contest a featured speaker shares their story of Christian faith with those who wish to remain behind. We have been fortunate to have had many wonderful athletes come and share their story including former NHLers Stu Grimson, Mark Osborne, Laurie Boschman, Michel Dion and Paul Henderson.
Our most recent Faith & Family event was held on Friday, January 20th, 2017 at Harbour Station when the Saint John Sea Dogs played the visiting Chicoutimi Sagueneens. Our special guest was former NHL goaltender and Stanley Cup champion, Chico Resch. Chico was a big hit with the fans, scouts and media, dropping the post-game ceremonial puck, autographing photos and speaking following the game to all those who remained behind. Chico shared many stories from his NHL career and about his journey of faith.
Plans are already underway for a 2017-18 season Faith & Family event. Stay tuned.
BIBLE GIFT OFFER
Typically we receive close to 100 players responding to the gift offer. Bibles are also made available to minor hockey, Junior A and Midget teams.
HMI has also published “Breakaway” and “Jouer pour Gagner”, a Hockey New Testament in French and English, featuring testimonies from current players in the game. This has been made available for distribution from youth hockey to the pros. At the 2015 Memorial Cup in Quebec City 1000 copies were distributed during the week. If you would like more information on how you can get involved in the distribution of these Hockey New Testaments please contact us at HMI Atlantic.
A sport originating from Sweden that brings the exciting elements of hockey to the gymnasium floor and is an excellent cross-training sport for hockey players. Innebandy is a sport played by Peter Forsberg, Mats Sundin and other great Swedish players that have been part of their development as hockey players. The international term for the game is Floorball, a sport growing in popularity around the world. Features of the game include off-ice conditioning, quickness and agility training, a fun, safe and inexpensive sport, stickhandling, passing, shooting and scoring!
An Innebandy program is an excellent way for a local church to connect with families in their communities. The partnership between Hockey Ministries International and local churches enables a church to implement a program and offer a service to young people and their families. For more information on developing an Innebandy program contact HMI Atlantic.
