ROBERTSON-EAGLES MEMORIAL HMI GOLF CLASSIC

Sign_template.cdrThis year’s annual HMI Atlantic golf fundraiser was held Saturday, September 9, 2017 at the Petitcodiac Golf & Country Club in Petitcodiac, NB.  The fourteen teams of golfers hit the links bright and early to enjoy the best ball format, turning an individual sport into a team game.

The 9th was forecast to be a wet day. But as Saturday approached we saw an improved weather picture with rain scheduled for later in the afternoon. It turned out to be a great day for golf.  There were no bugs and with overcast skies it made for a pleasant morning out on the course. The golfers enjoyed their round of golf and returned to the clubhouse for a fabulous roast beef dinner.

Following the dinner our MC, Dr. Bill Shaw, who has served for many years on the international board for HMI, introduced some of our special guests including former NHLer Mike Eagles and Trevor Georgie, President and General Manager of the Saint John Sea Dogs. We were also so pleased to have Gerry Eagles with us again, the widow of Ernie Eagles, one of the two men the tournament has been named after in their honor.

When the totals were added up the day produced a record setting result. Over $11,000 was raised in support of the work of HMI here in Atlantic.   The outcome exceeded all expectations. I have said to many since that never in my wildest imagination would I have thought the golf event could raise such an amount.
We are so grateful to the many who contributed to the success of the day. It begins with our organizing committee who work behind the scenes on the numerous details to bring the day together. We are thankful for our sponsors that include the Halifax Mooseheads and Saint John Sea Dogs. We are thankful for those who donate prizes, for those who participate on a team and especially to those who made individual financial donations adding to the amazing result. And ultimately and most importantly we thank the Lord for His incredible kindness, blessings and provisions all these years. It has been His good pleasure to provide for us so we can continue this ministry.
The date has already been established for next year. Please set aside Saturday, September 8th, 2018 and join us for our golf event.

HOCKEY CLINICS

                   Joe Dipenta

HMI Atlantic for many years offered an annual weekend hockey clinic in Sussex NB to launch the community’s minor hockey program. Over 140 boys and girls registered each year to participate in the event.

This past summer HMI Atlantic conducted it’s first weekend clinic in Halifax NS from August 26-27, 2017. Former camper and HMI Atlantic intern, Ryan Francis was a key organizer in planning the weekend hockey clinic. In conjunction with his home church, Hillside Wesleyan, the team assembled to offer a wonderful weekend of hockey instruction to close to 90 young hockey players and their families. The on-ice instructional staff was an amazing collection of hockey experience including three former Stanley

Plans are already underway for a repeat event planned for August of 2018.

FAITH & FAMILY NIGHT

In conjunction with local teams HMI Atlantic has hosted Faith and Family Nights. A discounted group ticket is provided to churches, youth groups and teams to attend a game. Following the contest a featured speaker shares their story of Christian faith with those who wish to remain behind. We have been fortunate to have had many wonderful athletes come and share their story including former NHLers Stu Grimson, Mark Osborne, Laurie Boschman, Michel Dion and Paul Henderson.

We are so excited to have NHL great, Mike Gartner, coming to Saint John on January 20th, 2018 as our featured guest at Saint John Sea Dogs Faith & Family Night. Mike’s amazing career in the game was recently recognized by the NHL when he was selected as one of the one hundred greatest NHL players of all time. Mike will share about his NHL career and his faith journey.

Faith & Family Night will begin at 5:00pm when the doors open at Harbour Station prior to the  Saint John Sea Dogs – Quebec Remparts game. There will be opportunity prior to the game for fans to meet Mike and hear him speak. A HMI booth will also be set up to distribute

INNEBANDY/FLOORBALL

A sport originating from Sweden that brings the exciting elements of hockey to the gymnasium floor and is an excellent cross-training sport for hockey players. Innebandy is a sport played by Peter Forsberg, Mats Sundin and other great Swedish players that have been part of their development as hockey players. The international term for the game is Floorball, a sport growing in popularity around the world. Features of the game include off-ice conditioning, quickness and agility training, a fun, safe and inexpensive sport, stickhandling, passing, shooting and scoring!

An Innebandy program is an excellent way for a local church to connect with families in their communities. The partnership between Hockey Ministries International and local churches enables a church to implement a program and offer a service to young people and their families. For more information on developing an Innebandy program contact HMI Atlantic.
